How Much Does It Cost to Build a SaaS Application?
What a SaaS MVP really includes in 2026: tenancy, onboarding, admin, cloud, and the cost ranges founders should plan for.
A SaaS application is more expensive than a website with a login because you are building a business machine: many customers, configuration, onboarding, and something you can operate at 2 a.m.
The work that is not optional
- Authentication and tenant isolation
- A core workflow someone will pay for
- Admin so you are not the database
- Environments and a deploy path
- Basic observability and backups
Billing, complex analytics, and a marketplace of integrations can wait. Onboarding cannot. If a second customer requires your co-founder to click through production, you do not have SaaS yet — you have a hosted project.
Cost in practice
A narrow MVP with one persona and one workflow can sit in a mid budget band if you are ruthless about scope. A multi-role B2B product with SSO, audit, and two platforms (web + mobile) will not. Design is not optional on SaaS: empty states and permissions are the product. See UI/UX design and cloud & DevOps as part of the same budget, not extras.
Where founders overspend
Microservices before product-market fit. Native apps before a web loop works. Custom billing before a single paid customer. Read the monolith vs microservices article before you fragment a five-person team.
