When Should Your Business Move From a Monolith to Microservices?
Microservices are an organisational tool. Here is when a monolith is still the correct architecture — and when splitting it earns its keep.
Microservices solve independent deployability and team scaling. They do not solve a messy domain model. If one team owns the whole product, a well-modular monolith is usually faster, cheaper, and easier to debug.
Stay with a modular monolith when
- You have one product team.
- You are still finding the domain boundaries.
- Your pain is features, not deploy coupling.
- You cannot yet operate a mesh of services.
Split when the organisation is already split
If two teams cannot release without coordinating a single artefact, and that coordination is now the bottleneck, extract along a real domain seam — with an API contract, data ownership, and a plan for failure. See API development.
Do not split to impress a hiring round
Kubernetes plus twelve services plus one engineer is not scale. It is a distributed monolith with worse logs. Cloud & DevOps should follow the architecture, not lead it.
