How to Reduce Cloud Infrastructure Costs
Practical ways to cut AWS, Azure and GCP spend: architecture, idle resources, observability, and the conversations finance actually needs.
Cloud bills grow in the dark. The first optimisation is visibility: what environment, which service, which team. Without tags and a monthly review, you will negotiate discounts on waste.
Turn off the obvious
- Non-production running 24/7 at production size
- Unattached volumes and leftover load balancers
- Over-replicated logs nobody queries
- Managed services provisioned “just in case”
Then look at architecture
Chatty services, N+1 queries, and chatty frontend bundles show up as compute. Fixing the application is often cheaper than a reserved instance on a bad design. Docker and Kubernetes can help utilisation — they can also add idle cluster tax if you adopted them too early.
Make cost a product metric
Unit cost per tenant or per order tells you whether growth is healthy. If you cannot compute it, the bill will always feel like a surprise. We include this conversation in cloud consulting because a cheap architecture nobody can operate is not cheap.
